St Endellion is privileged to be welcoming two distinguished poets in March and May. Saturday 8th March Christopher Southgate and on the afternoon of Sunday 11th May Malcolm Guite.


Christopher Southgate

Saturday 11th March 10.30am – 3pm
Christopher Southgate has been publishing his poetry since 1985 and has won a number of awards including being shortlisted for the 2022 Bridport Prize. He is the author of nine collections of poetry, including a verse biography of T.S. Eliot and From 2023 took over the editorship of the Journal of the T.S. Eliot Society (UK).
He has taught at the University of Exeter since 1993. His main fields of study being science-religion debate, ecotheology and environmental ethics, and Christian poetry.
On 8th March, in preparation for Lent, he will lead a poetic exploration of the following quotation by T.S. Eliot ‘Humankind cannot bear very much reality.’ He will use his own poetry and that of Eliot to aid our personal journeys of exploration

Christiopher will also be reading some of his poems in the liturgy based on The Tempest, which Professor Paul Fiddes had written for 7.30p in St Minver Church on palm Sunday 13th April.


Malcolm Guite

Sunday 11th May 2pm-5pm St Endellion Hall
Malcolm Guite is an internationally celebrate poet and academic. He is the author of several volumes of poetry and has written books on Christian faith and theology. He is perhaps best known for his sonnets in which his stated aim is ‘to be profound without ceasing to be beautiful.’
Guite was ordained priest in the Church of England in 1991 and served as a parish priest for several years before returning to academic life. He lectures both in this country and in Canada and the United Staes.
On 11th May He will be reading from his poetry collections and reflecting on how the poetic imagination can express and deepen our spiritual lives.
